How to tailor your CV to a job offer in 20 minutes
Headline, summary, order of experience, keywords: the method to tailor your CV to every offer without exaggerating and without redoing your layout.

Sending the same CV to every offer is the fastest way to apply, and the least effective. Tailoring your CV does not mean rewriting it or embellishing your background: it means bringing forward what matters for this particular role, in the order the recruiter looks for it.
1. The headline: the job you are applying for
The headline is the first line read. Use the job title from the offer when it matches your profile: “Veterinary assistant” rather than “Looking for opportunities” or “Versatile profile”. Add a distinguishing detail if useful: “Veterinary assistant — 3 years in a small-animal clinic”.
2. The summary: three lines that answer the offer
Under the headline, two or three lines sum up what you bring to this role: your most relevant experience, a key skill the offer asks for, your availability. Change these lines for every offer: it is the most rewarding part of the exercise.
3. Order and content of your experience
- Put the experience closest to the role first, even if it is not the most recent (for example in a “Relevant experience” section).
- For each role, lead with the duties that match the offer and trim the others.
- Add a figure whenever you can: number of customers, revenue, lead times, volumes.
4. The ad’s keywords
Many companies use applicant tracking software (ATS) that compares your CV with the offer. Reuse the exact terms of the ad when they truly describe what you can do: software names, certifications, licences, techniques. Never add a skill you do not have: it will be tested at the interview.
5. Skills: few, but useful
A list of fifteen generic skills says nothing. Keep the six to eight skills that matter for the offer, starting with those it mentions.
6. Do not break the layout
A visually polished CV shows you take things seriously. The risk when tailoring in a hurry is shifting columns, changing fonts or spilling onto a second page. Work from a fixed template and only change the text blocks. Always export to PDF before sending.
Checklist before sending
- The headline matches the role;
- The summary mentions at least two requirements of the offer;
- Your most relevant experience is visible without scrolling;
- The key words of the ad appear, honestly;
- The CV fits on one page (two at most for an experienced profile);
- The file is a PDF named after you.
Do it for every offer, without losing your evenings
MakeYouFirst automates exactly this method: it reads the offer, picks the relevant experience and skills from your profile, rewrites only the text blocks you allow, and leaves your layout, fonts and images untouched. Nothing is invented: only your profile is used as a source, and you approve before anything is sent.
